Other alternatives surely are highly secure but then, who else knows about them and uses them besides you? If they can make use of your existing contacts on your local device and social networking accounts and that you can use those apps to have a contact with them without requiring any invitation or even your friend to download those apps or whatever, then it can be a proper reason to use those apps although the security is on your side only if they are not using those apps when you do the phone call, messaging or even chat.
I do have Orbot on my Android and it's starting to get handy when it comes to surfing the net on that thing with Orbot enabled as it uses its own proxy for net surfing that leads to Tor technology. You can use other apps while online like there shouldn't be a problem but when it comes to net surfing, you will need Orbot up and running. Nowadays, the Tor technology is on life support and that I may have to find the complete alternative to this for mobile devices. There's already one so far for the computers which may be Aviator.
